About This Site

Gamma Iota is a small reference site about fraternity and sorority life in the United States. It exists for three groups of people: students deciding whether to go through recruitment or intake, parents trying to understand what their kid is signing up for and what it will cost, and chapter officers who inherited a treasurer or standards role and need to understand the machinery behind it.

Our pages stick to how the system works — councils and umbrella organizations, recruitment and intake processes, chapter finances and tax status, and what colleges are legally required to disclose about student organizations. Where a claim rests on an authority, we link the authority: the national umbrella conferences, the IRS, and the official text of federal law.

An honest note about what this site is and isn't: these pages are reviewed reference material, written to be accurate and current as general background. They are not professional advice. For tax and legal questions, talk to a professional; for questions about a specific chapter, talk to your campus fraternity and sorority life office and the organization's national headquarters.
